How are valves and actuators matched?

First the valve body is selected: its size and kvs value are determined by the design flow rate and the required pressure drop across the valve. The actuator is then chosen according to the valve stroke, the thrust needed for the close-off differential pressure and the controller signal (on/off, 3-position or DC 0…10 V). Siemens Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Siemens valve body work without an actuator?

No. The valve body is the mechanical part that regulates the flow; the movement comes from the actuator mounted on it. The actuator, in turn, operates on a signal from a room thermostat or the building automation system. Every valve page lists the actuators verified for that series.

When is a pressure-independent control valve (PICV) the right choice?

In fan coil, air handling unit and multi-circuit heating and cooling systems, when every circuit must receive its design flow rate even as the pressure fluctuates. A PICV combines flow setting, a differential pressure regulator and a control valve in a single body, so no separate balancing valve is needed.

What is the difference between a 3-position and a DC 0…10 V actuator?

A 3-position actuator works with open, stop and close commands; the controller positions the valve step by step. With a DC 0…10 V (or 4…20 mA) actuator, the valve position is directly proportional to the signal value, so proportional control is more precise. The choice depends on the controller output.

Which Siemens thermostat should I choose?

The RAA, RDD, RDH and RDE series suit control of combi boilers, zone valves or thermal actuators; the RAB, RDF, RDG and RDQ series suit fan coil systems; Connected Home products suit remote control via a mobile app. The supply voltage and output type must match the device being controlled.
