Water Meter Separation and Individual Water Accounts
In buildings supplied through a single water meter, we handle the installation of a separate water meter and a separate utility account for every dwelling unit end to end: site survey, GIS project drawings for the water utility, consulting during the approval and acceptance process, mechanical installation and group account set-up.

What Is Meter Separation?
Meter separation (also called installation separation or account separation) means cancelling the main water account of several dwelling units that are supplied through one water meter and opening a separate water account for each unit.
It ensures that individual consumption is measured accurately and billed fairly: every apartment or business pays only for the water measured by its own meter, and there is no longer any need to split a shared bill between units.
Utilities usually open individual accounts according to the number of units listed in the building's occupancy permit. Check your local water utility's rules before planning the project.
Who Is It For?
- Apartment buildings and residential complexes supplied through a single meter
- Building managers who split a shared water bill between apartments
- Mixed-use buildings where shops and homes share the same meter
- Units where tenant and owner consumption should be measured separately
We inspect the building on site and determine how the separation can be carried out technically.
The Meter Separation Process: Step by Step
- 1Site survey
The building's existing mains connection, meter location and pipe routing are inspected on site; the number of dwelling units and the meter positions are determined.
- 2GIS project
Our survey and engineering teams take measurements and draw a geo-referenced GIS project in the format required by the water utility.
- 3Utility approval
The project is submitted to the water utility for approval. During approval we follow up correspondence with the utility and complete any missing items on your behalf.
- 4Mechanical installation
Materials are checked for compliance with the applicable regulations and standards; meter locations, valves and distribution piping are installed in line with the utility's installation rules.
- 5Acceptance
We provide consulting during the utility's acceptance inspection, and any deficiencies found are corrected.
- 6Accounts
The supply contracts of the unit owners or occupants are planned and completed as a group.
GIS Project Drawings
The basis of a meter separation application is a project showing the existing mains connection and the new meter positions. The existing mains lines are inspected on site, measurements are taken together with our survey and engineering teams, and a geo-referenced GIS project in the format required by the water utility is drawn.
The project is submitted to the utility for approval; once approval is complete, the installation phase begins.
Approval and Acceptance Consulting
We provide consulting throughout the process with the water utility, from project approval to acceptance of the installation: preparing the application file, responding to correction requests from the utility and following up the checks at the acceptance stage.
All materials to be used in the installation are checked for compliance with the applicable regulations and standards. Non-compliant parts or parts that need replacing are identified, a technical report is prepared, and the necessary changes are made in line with the utility's installation rules.
Required Documents
Individuals are usually asked for one of the following official documents:
- National identity card
- An officially certified identity document or civil registry record
- Passport, marriage certificate, driving license or attorney ID card
- In addition, a document or written statement showing that the applicant is the owner or tenant
Legal entities need a letter of authority and the company stamp. For applications made through a representative, the original notarized power of attorney is usually required.

Utility Connection Charges
For Homes
For Businesses
The charge types above follow the model of the Istanbul water utility (see its installation separation procedures page, in Turkish). Amounts, installment options and eligibility rules differ by utility and country, so check your local regulations. These are official charges paid to the water utility; our project, installation and consulting fees are quoted separately after the site survey.
Products Used for Meter Separation
Separation projects use a water meter of the right size for each dwelling unit, plus valves before and after the meter. Browse the products and request a quote for your project:
Frequently Asked Questions
What is water meter separation?
In a building supplied through a single water meter, the main account is cancelled and a separate meter and separate water account are set up for each dwelling unit. Each apartment or business then pays for its own consumption.
Which documents are needed for meter separation?
Utilities usually ask individuals for an official identity document together with a document or written statement showing that they are the owner or tenant. Legal entities need a letter of authority and the company stamp. Requirements vary by utility.
How much are the utility connection charges?
They are set by each water utility. Typically they include a security deposit and contributions to water and sewerage infrastructure costs; for businesses the sewerage contribution may depend on floor area. Check your local utility's current tariff.
Can the security deposit be paid in installments?
Some utilities allow the deposit to be spread over several bills on request. Check your local water utility's tariff rules.
Can a separate account be opened in a building without an occupancy permit?
It depends on the utility. Some accept earlier gas, telephone or electricity contracts, or property tax records, for older buildings and grant temporary service; for new buildings an occupancy permit is normally required, and a temporary account may be possible with a completion certificate.
