Caleffi Products

Caleffi is a manufacturer of plumbing and heating components, founded in 1961 by Francesco Caleffi in Gozzano, south of Lake Orta in Italy; since 1975 its headquarters and production have been located in Fontaneto d’Agogna. It makes components for heating, cooling, plumbing and heat-recovery ventilation systems; according to the company, all of its production takes place at 13 plants in Italy and its products reach more than 90 countries. The Caleffi products available at Novus Energy are used at different points of an installation, from the boiler room to the apartment inlet: safety relief valves, pressure reducing valves and their replacement cartridges, DISCAL® air separators, DIRTMAG® magnetic dirt separators and the Caleffi XS® under-boiler filter, MINICAL® and ROBOCAL automatic air vents, radiator air vents, automatic filling units, a thermostatic mixing valve for underfloor heating, and a flow switch. Safety relief valves (311, 312 and 530 series)

The valve opens when the calibrated set pressure is reached and discharges water, preventing the pressure in the boiler, the hot water storage tank and other system components from rising to a dangerous level. The 311 series has female-female 1/2" and 3/4" connections, and the 312 series has a male-female 1/2" connection (PN 10, 5–110 °C). The diaphragm-type 530 series for heating systems includes 1"×1 1/4" and 1 1/4"×1 1/2" models; those set to 2.5 and 3 bar are TÜV certified.

Pressure reducing valves (5330, 5332, 5334..H, 533..H and 5350 series)

They reduce the high and fluctuating water pressure coming from the mains and keep it constant at the set value. The inclined 5330 and 5332 series are designed for apartment installations, where size and quiet operation matter, and for protecting hot water storage tanks (setting 1–6 bar, max. 40 °C; the 5332 has a 0–10 bar pressure gauge). Models with the “H” code are approved under EN 1567 for inlet water temperatures up to 80 °C (setting 1–5.5 bar).

The 5350 series is a model with a replaceable cartridge that can be preset before installation using the indicator on its adjustment knob (1/2"–2", max. inlet pressure 25 bar). The 533..H micro pressure reducers are offered for water dispensers and beverage and coffee machines. Replacement cartridges for the inclined valves and a 0–10 bar pressure gauge are also listed separately.

Air separators (DISCAL®)

The DISCAL® 551 series continuously and automatically removes the air in heating and cooling circuits, down to micro-bubbles; the separated air is discharged through the float-type air vent on top of the body. Deaerated water circulates silently, and the risk of corrosion and local overheating is reduced. Caleffi recommends installing the device preferably downstream of the boiler, on the suction side of the pump, in a vertical position. Novus Energy offers brass models with drain for horizontal pipes in 3/4"–2" (max. 10 bar, 0–110 °C).

Magnetic dirt separators (DIRTMAG®) and under-boiler filter (Caleffi XS®)

The DIRTMAG® 5463 series separates sand and sludge particles circulating in a closed circuit and collects them in its large lower chamber; magnets in a ring on the outside of the body capture ferrous debris. According to Caleffi, it can separate particles down to 5 µm; it is installed on horizontal pipes and is available in 3/4"–2", in uninsulated and insulated versions (10 bar, 0–110 °C).

Caleffi XS® (5459 series) is a compact filter with 3/4" connections, installed under the combi boiler: it separates debris with an 800 µm filter, a neodymium magnet and a collection chamber, and its transparent window shows whether cleaning is needed (max. 3 bar, 0–90 °C).

Automatic air vents (MINICAL®, ROBOCAL) and radiator air vents

They release air that accumulates in the system without manual intervention, preventing oxygen-related corrosion, air pockets in radiators and pump cavitation. The MINICAL® (5020) and the MINICAL® with automatic shut-off cock (5021) are installed vertically on air separators, manifolds and risers, at points where air pockets can form; the ROBOCAL (5026) is a compact model with vertical discharge. The 5080 series hygroscopic air vent is fitted to the radiator; its cellulose-disc cartridge (5081) can be replaced without draining the radiator, and Caleffi recommends replacing it at least every 36 months.

Automatic filling units (553 and 554 series)

Installed on the water supply line of closed heating systems, they consist of a pressure reducing valve, a filter, a shut-off valve and a check valve. When the system pressure drops, they automatically top up water and keep the pressure at the set value; the setting can be made before the system is filled. The 553 series has 1/2" connections (setting 0.2–4 bar, factory setting 1.5 bar); for higher flow rates, the 554 series model available at Novus Energy has 3/4" connections (setting 1–6 bar).

Thermostatic mixing valve (5202 series, underfloor heating)

It keeps the mixed water at the set temperature even when supply conditions change. Caleffi offers the 5202 series for underfloor (radiant floor) heating systems: setting range 20–43 °C, max. primary inlet temperature 90 °C, 3/4" (520251) and 1" (520261) male connections; the setting can be locked with the knob.

Flow switch (626 series)

It detects whether there is flow in the pipe and opens or closes an electrical contact; it is used to control devices such as pumps, burners and compressors or to trigger an alarm. In heating systems, its main task is to stop the burner when circulation in the boiler circuit stops. The 626600 can be adapted to pipes from 1" to 8" (max. 10 bar, −30–120 °C).

Which Caleffi Product Is Used Where?

What does the DIRTMAG® magnetic dirt separator do?

It separates sludge and ferrous particles from the water circulating in a closed heating or cooling circuit and collects them in its lower chamber. According to Caleffi, it can separate particles down to 5 µm; the magnets sit in a removable ring on the outside of the body. When the ring is removed and the drain cock is opened, the accumulated debris can be discharged even while the system is running. It is preferably installed on the return line to the boiler, on the inlet side of the pump.

What set pressure should a safety relief valve have?

The set (calibration) pressure is selected according to the maximum permissible working pressure of the boiler or system being protected. Caleffi 311 and 312 series valves open fully at no more than 20% above the set value and close when the pressure falls 20% below the set value. The size and discharge capacity of the valve must be determined by qualified technical personnel in accordance with applicable regulations. In a heating system, the valve is installed on top of the boiler or on the flow pipe, no more than 1 m from the boiler, and the connection between the valve and the boiler must be uninterrupted.

Does an automatic air vent work with its cap open or closed?

It depends on the type: a standard float-type air vent works with the cap open (loosened), a hygroscopic air vent with the cap fully closed. On the standard MINICAL® model, the top cap is loosened during operation; on the model with a hygroscopic safety cap, it is fully tightened. The 5080 series hygroscopic air vent for radiators also works automatically with the cap fully closed: when the cellulose discs in the cartridge come into contact with water, they swell by 50% in volume and close the valve; when air arrives, they dry out and let the air escape. On the ROBOCAL, air is vented automatically when the cap is opened one turn from the fully closed position and left there.

How is a pressure reducing valve adjusted?

First close the shut-off valve on the outlet side, then bring the valve to the required pressure using its adjusting screw or adjustment knob. On the inclined 533 series, turning the locking nut under the cap clockwise with a 10 mm Allen wrench or a flat-head screwdriver increases the pressure, and turning it counterclockwise decreases it; continue until the pressure gauge shows the required value. On the 5350 series, the indicator on the top adjustment knob allows the valve to be set to the required pressure before installation; a pressure gauge on the outlet is not required. The factory setting of both series is 3 bar; after adjustment, slowly open the shut-off valve on the outlet side.

When should you choose a pressure reducer with the “H” code?

Choose an “H” model if the valve will operate with water above 40 °C. The standard 5330, 5332 and 5334 inclined pressure reducers are designed for water up to 40 °C; the 533..H models are approved under EN 1567 for inlet water temperatures up to 80 °C and have a setting range of 1–5.5 bar. Their replacement cartridges also differ: 533000 for the standard series and 533000H for the H series.
