KAS Natural Gas Thread Sealing Paste
Gas jointing paste is one of the most basic sealing materials used in natural gas installations. Usually sold in yellow packs or tubes, this paste is not used on its own; it is an auxiliary filler used together with hemp (flax).
Here is what you need to know about this product:
1. What Is It Used For?
It fills the microscopic gaps at the joints (threaded connections) of natural gas pipes. Its main purpose is to prevent gas leaks and protect the joint against corrosion.
2. Key Properties
-
Non-Hardening: This is its most important property. It does not harden or crack over time, so the joint stays tight even if the installation is subject to vibration or flexing.
-
Easy Disassembly: Because the paste does not dry out, the joint does not seize; even years later it can easily be opened with a wrench if a pipe needs to be removed.
-
Heat Resistance: Withstands standard installation temperatures and pressure fluctuations.
-
Greasy Consistency: Forms a protective layer that prevents metal threads from rusting.
3. How to Apply
To use gas jointing paste effectively, follow these steps:
-
Cleaning: Remove oil and dust from the threaded part of the pipe.
-
Winding the Hemp: Wind a thin layer of hemp/flax clockwise over the threads (in the tightening direction).
-
Applying the Paste: Work some paste into the wound hemp with a finger or a brush.
-
Tightening: Fit the fitting in place and tighten it firmly. Wipe off any excess paste with a cloth.
4. Points to Note
-
Use Only with Hemp: The paste alone (without hemp) is not safe on high-pressure gas lines.
-
Alternatives: Although liquid sealants or PTFE (Teflon) tapes replace this paste in some cases today, installers still prefer the classic paste-and-hemp combination for its reliability and low cost.
-
Standards Compliance: Make sure the product carries a standards approval mark (TSE or the mark required in your country) or a statement that it is suitable for natural gas use.
Important Note: Natural gas is no joking matter. If you suspect a leak at home or a new installation is being made, always leave the work to a licensed gas installer.
