Safety relief valves are used on boilers, in hot water storage tank installations, in solar thermal systems, at booster pump set outlets, and in domestic water and fire water installations.
Safety relief valves are safety devices used in closed-loop heating systems to relieve excess pressure and limit it to a preset value. Safety relief valves are required to prevent damage to the system and hazardous situations caused by high pressure. They also help protect equipment such as heat exchangers and pressure tanks.
Safety relief valves are manufactured with a fixed setting at specific pressures in accordance with EN 4126-1, and users are not permitted to change the pressure setting.
The relief pressure of the safety relief valve is marked on the safety plug on the cap.
CAUTION
Tampering with the safety plug of the valve or changing the valve setting is dangerous and must be avoided.
How Does a Safety Relief Valve Work?
The operating principle of safety relief valves is based on the balance between two opposing
forces.
These forces are:
1- The force exerted by the compressed spring
2- The force exerted by the fluid pressure on the diaphragm
The moment the fluid pressure force in the closed-loop system overcomes the spring force,
the diaphragm lifts and water is allowed to pass between the seat and the diaphragm.
Water is thus discharged, and the system pressure is prevented from
exceeding the pressure limit.
Connection and Installation
- Before safety relief valves are connected to the installation, it is important to select products with the correct size and set pressure.
- The safety relief valve must be selected and installed by qualified technical personnel.
- It is recommended to install the safety relief valve in an easily accessible place in the boiler room: at the highest point on the boiler or on the hot water outlet line right next to the boiler.
- In systems with a hot water storage tank, a tank safety relief valve (10 bar) must be fitted at the cold water inlet of the tank. In these systems, the valve size is determined by the tank volume.
- When installing the safety relief valve, make sure that the discharge flow is in the direction of the arrow on the product.
- The safety relief valve can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but must not be mounted upside down.
- The diameter of the discharge pipe must be at least equal to the outlet diameter of the safety relief valve, and the pipe must be installed with a slight slope. Under these conditions, the discharge pipe can be up to 2 m long and contain a maximum of 2 elbows. If the discharge pipe has to be longer than 2 m, its diameter must be increased by one size. The discharge pipe must not be longer than 4 m or contain more than 3 elbows.
